Understanding Concrete Finishes

Concrete is one of the most commonly used construction materials and is used in a huge number of projects. It is incredibly strong and durable, making it a great option for both residential and commercial constructions. As well as being practical, it is also aesthetically pleasing and offers a range of appearances for various different uses.  

Concrete can be finished in a selection of ways using materials and technique. Getting a good understanding of these finishes can help you to choose the best option for your project. 

Basic Smooth Surface: 

The most simple and basic of the concrete finish options is a smooth surface finish. After the concrete has been placed into its forms, a screed is used to level out the surface. These screeds are generally long pieces of metal or wood which get moved across the surface of the concrete. This process removes any excess and fills gaps. 

Floating Or Trowelling: 

After the concrete has been smoothed with a screed, trowels can be used to fine level the surface. This process can be done both mechanically or manually, and the result is a perfectly smooth and soft finish. 

Broom Finished: 

For some applications, concrete is required to be slip-resistant and in these cases, a broom finish can be used. After the concrete has been placed and levelled, a broom is used to create small ridges in the surface. These ridges provide traction and improve the safety of the concrete. 

Exposed Aggregate Finish: 

Pavements of many old cities feature exposed aggregate finish concrete, and this is a slip-resistant and attractive option. It is created by the top layer of concrete being washed away in order to expose the edges of the natural stone. For this type of finish, other materials are often missed into the concrete, such as granite, limestone or quartz. 

Stamped Concrete: 

Concrete stamps are often used to create texture on a concrete surface. These stamps are comprised of panels that have inlaid designs, and they are placed onto the concrete before it has set. The designs of these stamps often include stone, brick or other patterns to create the desired look.
